Tips to Improve Sleep Therapy

While some people adjust immediately to sleeping with a CPAP, many find the change to be difficult resulting in restless, uncomfortable sleep. The trick to getting effective, comfortable therapy is to be consistent with your CPAP device. Regardless of how the night before is, you always should wear it the following day.

Find the Right Mask

If you are having a poor CPAP experience, document your concerns and follow-up with us so that we may address the issues that may cause you difficulty in adapting to your CPAP therapy. Most people give up and allow serious health problems to worsen or get into an increased risk for cardiovascular issues. But we urge you to carry on with treatment to succeed with your CPAP device. This will result in increased energy, decreased fatigue, decreased sleepiness, and an overall better lifestyle.

Use Your CPAP Every Sleep

Use your therapy every time you sleep, even during daytime naps. Generally speaking, the more you use your CPAP device, the better managed your sleep apnea will be and the better your days will get.

Use a Humidifier

Make sure that your mask is comfortable and that you can put it on and take it off with ease. Your mask should not cause pain or uncomfortable pressure, or allow air to leak around the sides. Our therapists will help you choose the right mask for your therapy. In places that have low humidity, a heated humidifier for your CPAP can make it more comfortable. Symptoms such as dry mouth, nasal congestion, or mouth breathing, may be alleviated by the inclusion of a humidifier.

More Tips

If you're certain you have a good mask or want to try some tips at home before getting a new mask, we leave you with some helpful suggestions.

  • Make small adjustments to your mask every night for something new to see what works
  • Understand the latest technology - It may be time for an update
  • Keep your machine, mask & tubing clean
  • Replace filters when needed
  • Hang the hose over your headboard to allow more mobility
  • Invest in accessories like a CPAP pillow to help
